Live Empowered for Senior Day
The Live Empowered Program of the American Diabetes Association works to educate the underserved African American communities in Houston and the surrounding area. This year the African American Initiatives is conducting Senior Diabetes Days at the local senior living facilities, churches and multi service centers throughout the year.
Jennifer Williams, Associate Manager for Community Programs visited The Anna Dupree Terrace, a senior living facility, St. John Church Downtown, and AHEPA-Phase 1 senior facility. This diabetes day is a symbol of how important it is to reach the community about the seriousness about diabetes. Each person had a direct experience with diabetes and was encouraged to know that the American Diabetes Association was there for them that day. Many took away from the class understanding meal planning and how important diabetes management is. Each senior diabetes day will have a nutrition and physical activity component. Volunteer Yvette Daniel conducted a Sit and Be Fit exercise class to at St. John Downtown to encourage seniors to become active daily.
The next senior diabetes day will be held on July 12, 2011 at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. For more information on how to request a diabetes education class for your church or community, please contact
