The American Diabetes Association, and ADA Leadership Board chairman Umesh Verma, are proud to announce Marc Watts, President of The Friedkin Group and John Schlosser, Chief Commerical Officer of Kinder Morgan Terminals will lead the association’s 2011 Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes campaign. The ADA is also pleased to have Mark Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital serving as Honorary Chairman.

This family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, November 19th at Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston and Northshore Park in The Woodlands.  Step Out features a 5K run, a 3K walk and a health and fitness festival. Step Out is the ADA’s largest fundraiser, bringing together thousands each year in the fight to find a cause and a cure for this costly and potentially deadly disease.

“I hope you will join me in pledging to make a real difference for the millions of people affected by diabetes.”  – Mark A. Wallace, President & CEO, Texas Children’s Hospital.

If current trends continue, one in three children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.  By supporting Step Out, you can help raise awareness about the dangers of diabetes and the need for those who are at-risk to take preventative action  to avoid long-term medical costs.

How Diabetes Affects your Company

Based on a size of 500 full-time employees:

· 50 employees have diabetes (37 diagnosed, 13 undiagnosed)

· 125 employees have pre-diabetes

· Your company will pay an estimated $580,635 annually for healthcare costs and the cost increase could potentially be an additional $631,125 if those with pre-diabetes develop diabetes.
