What’s the best way to jumpstart fundraising for this year’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes? A Kick-Off party! Both our Houston and The Woodlands Kick-Off parties were huge successes, bringing together rookie and veteran participants together for BINGO, bowling and games.
We had a blast at the Woodlands Kick-off on Thursday, September 8th at Main Event. Dr. Paul Piper from Sadler Clinic welcomed the guests by speaking about recent diabetes research updates and sending a call to action for Step Out. Our Red Strider speakers, Bob Crowley and Allyson Armstrong, spoke about how diabetes has impacted them and how being a Red Strider has empowered them making them who they are today. Bob, who is also the emcee on the day of Step Out and his wife, Debbie, have been involved in Step Out for a number of years and are a special part of the Step Out family in The Woodlands. Team members were able to come together and present new fundraising ideas to all participants – it was great seeing everyone working together to come up with some new and innovative ideas to reach our goal of $500,000 this year! Overall, it was a fun filled night all to raise awareness for diabetes and Step Out!
The Houston Kick-off was this past Wednesday, September 14th at Dave & Busters. We started off the night with our Co-Chairmen, John Schlosser from Kinder Morgan and Marc Watts from The Friedkin Group speaking about their company’s’ involvement in Step Out. Their involvement and support is outstanding, and they did a great job of welcoming everyone to the Kick-Off! John has even promised to kiss a pig to motivate his employees to fundraise more money for Step Out – How fun!
Most importantly, our Red Striders Jennifer Wilson, John Flaherty and Chris LeCates spoke about their experiences with diabetes and encouraged all in attendance to ‘kick-off’ their fundraising efforts. They were such inspirations to all participants and reminded everyone who it is we walk for. Jennifer, a marathon runner, holds active lifestyle close to her heart and really believes in the promotion of walking and running through Step Out. Our Youth ambassadors, John and Chris, have not let diabetes stop them from doing what they love. Chris recently went to Washington D.C. to speak to legislators to push for diabetes research. It’s an understatement to say that our Red Striders are remarkable people!
A handful of Team Captains from our 2010 top teams, Albert Benifield, David LeCates, Brittany McCurry and David Doyle, shared different ideas they have done to motivate their team. It was a great way to showcase the different ways of fundraising and promoting for Step Out for families, organizations and corporations!
Both events were a ton of fun, and we enjoyed meeting some of our Step Out Participants. Thank you for everyone who came out and to our speakers for helping us ‘Kick-Off” Step Out!
Mark your calendars for Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes on November 19th in Houston and The Woodlands!
