The Houston American Diabetes Association’s 11th annual Feria de Salud was held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Mason Park (541 S. 75th Street) in southeast Houston. This was the fifth year for the event to be held at this City of Houston park, located at 541 S. 75th Street. The hours were from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Presenting sponsor for the event was HEB Grocery.
Inside the community center/ screening area, Laura Clay, RN, BSN and the CHRISTUS Community Health Ministries team supervised the glucose and blood pressure screenings. Prevent Blindness Texas screened for vision problems. Jicella Longeria and her team from Harris Health System performed cholesterol exams. Dr. Sloan Gordon performed podiatry screenings. The Kidney Trust was a new screening organization for 2012. This non-profit organization seeks to reduce the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through free, rapid screening in non medical settings and to provide financial assistance to people affected by CKD. The Harris Health System Trouble Shooters were on hand with children’s immunizations and pediatric flu shots.
Assisting with various screenings were more than 50 students from the Texas Southern University School of Pharmacy, The University of Houston School of Pharmacy and Walgreens student interns.
Feria Presenting sponsor HEB hosted the education tent, where certified diabetes educators and nutritionists gave three presentations on healthy eating and how to make better food choices . ADA nutrition materials and guides were given to participants in choice of English or Spanish.. Everyone who attended a class could register for several prizes provided by Summit Dental. Pre and post testing of participants was coordinated by students from San Jacinto College.
Four federally qualified health clinics (FQHC’s) were on hand to provide medical services options to those who are uninsured or underinsured. The Harris County Hospital District provided information on Gold Card access. All of those without “health homes” were provided with locations and information about the FQHC’s in the Houston area.
The Feria entertainment staged was hosted by Elizabeth Lopez and “Zona Festival” and featured Zumba demonstrations, Mariachis and flamenco dancers. Dr. Essa Kawaja, DDS of Summit Dental spoke with the crowd about diabetes and dental issues. Certified diabetes educator Estella Salinas and nutritionist Monica Martinez also spoke about the dangers of diabetes and the importance of diabetes prevention. Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia also spoke on the importance of health, family and diabetes prevention in the Hispanic community.
Diabetes is an urgent health problem in the Latino community. Their rates of diabetes are almost double those of non-Latino whites. Feria de Salud is the major component of the Houston ADA’s Hispanic outreach efforts called Por tu Familia (For your Family)
Getting the Word Out
The American Diabetes Association relies heavily on media public service announcements for Feria de Salud. Univision Television (KXLN Channel 45 and Telefutura/Channel 67) and the Liberman Radio group (La Raza, LaRanchera, El Norte and La Bonita) have been extremely generous media sponsors for Feria since its inception in 2004. Based on our surveys, mass media is the way virtually all attendees hear about Feria.
The ADA had 1,500 flyers printed for the event. They were distributed through committee members and staff at local low/no pay clinics, area businesses, nearby apartment complexes, schools and churches. An electronic copy of the flyers was also developed and sent to sponsors and interested participants for distribution.
Thank You to ALL of our 2012 Feria Sponsors
