Houston American Diabetes Association continues to grow with sixth annual biking event to stop diabetes.
HOUSTON, TX – August 10, 2014 — Since its debut in 2009, the Houston Tour de Cure has quickly become a top earner amongst the 89 markets that participate in this signature fundraising event for the American Diabetes Association. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at Katy Mills Mall. Registration is now open on the Houston Tour de Cure website, where participants can sign up to ride as individual or as a part of a team.
The Houston Tour de Cure offers a memorable day of cycling and fun through beautiful country, as well as the personal satisfaction of completing a challenging ride and doing your part in the fight against diabetes. The Tour is open to everyone from occasional riders to expert cyclists with routes ranging from 10, 27, 47, 63 & 100 miles in length. All riders will enjoy a safe and well-marked route, superior SAG (support and gear) and medical support, and outstanding volunteers. This year’s routes will start and finish at Katy Mills Mall where ride participants will enjoy complimentary food and beverages, live music, and family-friendly activities.
“The Tour de Cure is such a fun event for me. I get to ride my bike, and I LOVE to ride my bike. The exercise is good for lowering my blood sugar, too,” remarked Lulu Aklestad, 2014 Houston Tour de Cure Youth Ambassador. “I also get to wear an awesome Red Rider jersey. During the ride other riders shout, ‘Go Red Rider’ to me and it makes me feel important!”
Funds raised through the Tour de Cure help support diabetes research, education and advocacy for the over 29 million children and adults in the United States living with diabetes, 1/3 of which don’t know they have it. Every 21 seconds another person in this country is diagnosed with diabetes. If current trends continue, one in three children born today will develop this chronic and life-threatening disease in their lifetime.
